The ITU-203B Iridium Transceiver Unit provides worldwide, full duplex satellite voice and data communications with an unmanned aircraft via the Iridium satellite network. The system allows the exchange of commands and status between a Ground Control Station (GCS) and the aircraft as well as providing two-way voice communications between the operator at the GCS and Air Traffic Control or other two way radio equipment in the aircraft. The standard configuration consists of an identical pair of ITU-203B Iridium Transceiver Units (LBTs) connected to L-Band Iridium-tuned Antennas.
The ITU-203B Iridium Transceiver Unit is designed around two Iridium LBTs, each with an externally accessible Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card reader that identifies the user account and enables the LBT to operate on the Iridium satellite network. Proprietary hardware and software sets up and monitors the voice and data connections. The hardware also provides power and application specific interfaces to the voice and data communication systems in the aircraft or Ground Control Station. User data is passed directly to and from one of the internal LBTs, without passing through a microcomputer.
